January 22- A bittersweet milestone

Sterling has reached another milestone in his life, but this one is a little sadder for me. As of today, Sterling has officially weaned himself. While I understand that every baby eventually meets this day, it’s a bit sad for me, because I can see my baby getting one step closer to being a little boy, and leaving behind that tiny little baby. I feel good that I have been able to provide him with perfect nutrition for 10 months, and I have enough milk frozen to continue to nourish him until he’s 11 if not 12 months old, but it still makes me a little sad to see this stage of his life come to a close. It’s also a new experience for me. Luckily Ella had a doctor’s appointment this morning to address the redness around her mouth (it’s just chapped from all the cold weather), so I was able to ask the pediatrician how much milk/ how many bottles a day Sterling should be drinking, I’ve never had to worry about counting ounces before, so this is new territory for me! So, he’s supposed to have 16-24 ounces of milk a day, broken up in 3-4 bottles. Today he had 4 bottles for a total of 25 ounces. At this rate I’ll still have enough milk to donate to the IBMP http://www.breastmilkproject.org/ right before we head back to Korea (it would be impossible for me to get all the frozen milk to Korea safely). Wow, I still can’t believe that little boy who had to receive his feedings through a gavage tube (a tiny feeding tube) in the NICU has grown up and weaned himself. Where has the time gone?
