May 10- Climbing stairs

While Ella’s been climbing stairs every chance she’s had since she was 9 months old, Sterling hasn’t had as many opportunities to test his climbing skills. We’re pretty vigilant about always keeping the gate to the stairs closed. Lately I’ve noticed Sterling becoming more and more interested in what’s happening on those stairs, so I let him have a whirl at them, and sure enough, he’s a climbing natural. We’ve started letting the kids climb the stairs when they go up to their room for naps or bedtime. They both love climbing the stairs, and scream and holler in delight the whole time, and it works really well to tire them out completely before they hit the crib. Watch their climbing at:

Tonight we had a very exciting night. We had our friends Mrs. Yu (Michael's co-worker), and her daughter Eun Ji, who brought her friend Su-Young, along with Mrs. Yu’s older sister (also Mrs. Yu), and her husband Mr. Han over for a barbeque. Our nanny, her husband, Mr. Chung, and their son, Seung Hwan also joined us. It was a full house to be certain, but we had such a wonderful and lively time. Some might even say we had too good of a time! It was an evening full of a mixture of conversation spoken in English and Hangul, good food…both American classics and Korean traditional food, and American pop music which was a hit with all our Korean guests. See some of our guests eating hors d’oeuvres at:

Eun Ji (on the right) and her best friend Su-young had a request for music that just made me laugh…Britney Spears. They love Britney Spears, and were soooo excited to listen to and dance to her music. I guess she really is a universal teenage icon. It’s funny how far stretching American pop culture is. They were happy to tell me that “Mission Impossible” was their favorite movie; they think Suri Cruise is so cute, they know Jessica Alba is pregnant and Angelina Jolie is having twins, and of course, they love Britney Spears. I save all the Hollywood magazines like InTouch, People, and Us to give to Eun Ji after I finish reading them. She (and her friends), love looking at all the pictures, and being “in the know” about American pop culture. As much as they know about American culture, there are still some things that escape them. Su-young was wearing a shirt that read “Back to the old skool.” They wanted to know what it meant…how do you explain “old school?” I was at a loss for words. For desert I made pound cake topped with fresh strawberries, vanilla ice cream, homemade whipped cream, and chocolate shavings…yum, it’s making me hungry just talking about it. Anyhow, Mrs. Yu and Eun Ji decided to let Sterling and Ella sample a little of their ice cream. I wasn’t worried about it, and wouldn’t thumb my nose at a couple of bites of ice cream; but I knew there was somebody else in the house who wouldn’t be as happy about the babies eating something like ice cream…Mrs. Yu’s sister! The kids’ enjoyment eating ice cream was only short lived. Mrs. Yu (the sister) came running into the kitchen to scold her sister and niece for letting the babies eat ice cream. I knew it was coming…

That crazy clapping you hear in the background is Mr. Han...he was really enjoying himself!
