March 16, 2008- A room of their own

We had an incredible first birthday party for the kids yesterday, and we can't wait for you to see all the pictures. Sorry it's a little bit of an overkill on the pictures...hopefully you'll feel just like you were there!
I'm so happy all of our hard work is paying off. We've been working really hard to unpack all of our household goods that arrived last week. Finally things are starting to come together and look like a home. One of the first rooms we've finished was the nursery. It's tight quarters, but I'm proud of how it's turned out. It's so nice to see the kids' actually using their furniture. We bought such nice cribs, and they've literally gotten about 3 months use total out of them! I think things will be a little more settled from now on, and the kids will actually get to start sleeping in their own cribs on a regular basis. Ella especially is probably most happy to see her crib. She's been sleeping in the pack-n-play for the past 8 months!
If you're wondering about the crazy wallpaper...we can't help it. This whole house is wallpapered in crazy Korean wallpaper. The nursery has the retro gray squares wallpaper in it. I certainly don't love it, but since we're leasing, there's nothing I can do about it (except for live with it ). Also, we haven't hung up the letters that spell out the kids names above their cribs yet. Maybe I can put that on my honey do list this weekend! And lastly, we still haven't found any light blocking curtains to hang on the sliding doors leading out to the balcony. It's great to have such a big window in there to let lots of light in while the kids are playing, but they need it pretty dark during the day for nap time. So, for the time being we have a quilt covering the window.
I would love to tell you that we use this beautiful changing table/dresser combo all the time, but that would be a big lie. Sadly, it almost never gets used. With the way these two wiggle and kick when you're changing them these days, even the safety straps on the changing pad won't hold them down. So, instead my diapers and wipes live in a wicker basket that travels up and down the stairs with us, and they mostly just get changed on the floor.
I'll be adding more pictures this week of the rest of our home as we complete more rooms, so be sure to check back later.
This has become a regular scene at our house in the evenings. The first time all the neighborhood children came over I had gone to the commissary to do our grocery shopping and left the babies home with Michael. When I got home ALL the children in the neighborhood were over playing in our family room. Seriously, there were children anywhere in age from 6 to 16! There were toys everywhere and it took me a minute to locate my own children! They all appeared to be having so much fun playing with Ella and Sterling...and all their toys. This has become a semi-regular occurrence. They're all very sweet and well behaved children. I poured some M&M's into a bowl and offered it to the kids, who each took exactly one single M. They all learn English in school, but since several of them are pretty young, they really don't know how to converse in English. So, for the most part I have no idea what they're saying, and the poor things will be asking me the same thing over and over again. I probably need to learn how to say "I don't understand," in Hangul. I did buy a couple of classic children's books, like "Little Red Riding Hood" written in Hangul that the little girls have started reading to the kids when they're over.
When Michael and I would dream about starting a family we knew we wanted to be the house where all the neighborhood children congregated- we just didn't envision that house would be in Wonju, S.Korea! No matter...we're very happy with the situation.
