August 10- Shark bait
“Hit ‘em, kick ‘em, punch ‘em in the nose!” Sterling is wearing his shark swim trunks Aun”Tia” Jenn sent him. He’s practicing for his trip to Kiawah Island this September, where it is always important for a boy to know what to do if he encounters a shark.
“Hit ‘em, kick ‘em, punch ‘em in the nose, punch ‘em in the nose!” (Okay, truly that’s not as funny until you see Grand-Mère chanting this and punching an imaginary shark...sorry to out you, Mom!)
We have a new fascination with belly buttons. Our own belly buttons, and even each other’s belly button. Here Ella is trying to lift up her swim suit so she can show you her “bee bo” (if you don’t know what a “bee bo” is, then you must read Sandra Boynton’s Belly Button Book). Yesterday I was changing Sterling’s diaper, and Ella walked up to examine what was going on. In an attempt to keep them both placated, I asked Ella where Sterling’s belly button was. She lifted up his shirt, stuck her head under there (I guess she was double checking that he actually had one…because you know, it’s not like they shared a womb or anything), then came back out with the biggest grin on her face and pointed to his belly button. I know that sounds pretty rudimentary, but actually, it’s a developmental milestone for them. For so long, they have been interchangeable. If you said, 'Ella, pick up the toy', Sterling may very well pick up the toy. But now they’re making the connection that he is Sterling and she is Ella, and they know each other’s name. Probably not so exciting for anyone besides Mommy and Daddy, but we’re tickled!
